[ARCHIVED] Town to Host Litter Prevention and Earth Day Programs

Second Saturday Service (1)

The Town of Fort Mill is hoping several new volunteer programs can restore the beauty of the Town’s public and green spaces following a recent rise of litter in the area.

To help combat the increase of trash found alongside roads, near neighborhoods and in green areas, the Town is excited to announce the launch of its newest litter pickup campaign- Second Saturday Service. On the second Saturday of each month, beginning April 10 through Sept. 11, the Town will host a litter pickup initiative at problem areas throughout the Town limits. The Town has highlighted several areas which have seen an increase in litter in recent months, including U.S. 21, Fort Mill Parkway, Springfield Parkway, Highway 160, Spratt Street, Steele Street, and North and South Doby’s Bridge Road.

As part of this program, volunteers will be able to sign up to collect debris from 8 a.m. to noon on any of those roads or a road/area of their choice. The Town will provide gloves, safety vests and trash bags, and Town employees will collect the filled trash bags following the event each month. Volunteers can sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c49a5ae2aabfac70-second. We encourage volunteers to share their collection successes by posting their photos with the hashtag #PickItUpPrideFortMill. See the bottom of the page for Litter Pick-Up Safety Tips, the Second Saturday Service Mission Statement and a Fort Mill Subdivision Map for identifying high-litter areas.

We have several other events and initiatives planned as well, including:

  • The Town’s Stormwater Department and Anne Springs Close Greenway are partnering to host an Adopt-A-Stream cleanup along Steele Creek on Saturday, April 17, 2021 from 9 a.m. to noon. Join us in celebration of Earth Day by keeping our waterways healthy and beautiful for all to enjoy! Please specify t-shirt sizes when registering. Sign up at: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C49A5AE2AABFAC70-earth.  Volunteers will meet at 971 Tom Hall St., Fort Mill, SC 29715 at the Blue Star Entrance. The Town will provide trash bags, safety vests and trash grabbers.
  • The Stormwater Department is hosting an Earth Day Art Contest. Create a poster and unique slogan for an environmental topic of your choice. Prizes will be given to winners in three groups (Preschool/Elementary, Middle/High School, Adult) for Most Creative, Most Informative and Best Slogan. Entries accepted April 12-21. See details on the Town and Stormwater Facebook pages. Click here to download the Consent Form.
  • The Town will soon be able to collect plastic shopping bags as part of its new Bags to Benches program. Collection bins will be placed at various locations in Town where residents can deposit clean, dry plastic shopping bags. The program is in partnership with Trex, a company which will produce a 48” bench for every 500 pounds of shopping bags deposited (equal to 40,500 bags).
