The Town of Fort Mill is commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks with a series of remembrances this year, including a reflection video and memorial display.
As we join the nation and world in honoring the victims and survivors of the 9/11 attacks, the Town invites the public to view our Facebook Remembrance video featuring local first responders sharing their memories of that day. The video, which includes Town leaders and members of the Fort Mill Police and Fire departments, can be viewed beginning at 6 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021 (video will go live at the bottom of this page and on our Facebook page at this time). We invite the public to share their memories of that day in the comments section of the video or by posting on social media with the hashtag #FortMillRemembers.
At 8:46 a.m., the community is asked to share in a Moment of Silence to mark the time when the first airplane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York.
A Community Ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at the Fort Mill Amphitheater located at Walter Elisha Park, 345 N. White Street, in partnership with Fort Mill High School Band. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on.
A First Responders Memorial will also be available for viewing outside the Fort Mill Fire Department, located at 121 Tom Hall St. On display will be first responder vehicles and 412 American flags to honor the number of first responders lost that day.
The Town is also offering the community a chance to volunteer in tribute to those affected by 9/11. With September 11 also known as the National Day of Service and Remembrance, or Patriot Day, the Town will be hosting its Second Saturday Service litter pick-up initiative that day. This event helps keep Fort Mill beautiful by inviting volunteers to pick up trash in the Town. Volunteers should meet that day between 8 and 9 a.m. at the Fort Mill Farmers Market, 106 N. White St. Look for the white Town tent where you will receive safety vests, trash bags and a special gift from the Town.
