[ARCHIVED] Town Remembers Former Congressman John Spratt

2

The Town of Fort Mill mourns the loss of former U.S. Congressman John Spratt who died this weekend at the age of 82. Spratt represented South Carolina’s 5th Congressional District, which includes Fort Mill, for more than 28 years in the U.S. House of Representatives. His family can also be traced back to the colonial era of York County. During his tenure as Congressman, he was instrumental in several pieces of legislation, including balancing the federal budget in 1997 and bringing the federal government and the Catawba Indian Nation together for a settlement where the Catawbas received federal recognition as well as $50 million.

Fort Mill Mayor Guynn Savage said Spratt will long be remembered for his dedication and service.

“He worked tirelessly and successfully as a Congressman and yet managed  to make himself available to lead community service here in York County,” Savage said. “His personal integrity and leadership set standards for us all.  Our community grieves the loss of such a good man and great friend.”
